Grey's leads entertainment list

The cast members of hospital drama Grey's Anatomy have been named the year's top entertainers by US magazine Entertainment Weekly.

It said the show had a cultural impact far beyond its 20 million viewers.

Steamy storylines and moral dilemmas have not only provoked office chatter but also emptied restaurants during broadcasts, the magazine said.

Also noted for their influence were video website YouTube, fake reporter Borat and actress Meryl Streep.

Entertainment Weekly executive editor Lori Majewski said: "Grey's isn't just a show, it's a phenomenon.

"Back in May when last season's final show aired, every place in New York City was empty. You could get a table at the best restaurants."

Grey's Anatomy, which stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey, is shown in the UK on Living TV and Five.

Strong performances

YouTube, where users can add clips of their choice, was also praised for its influence, particularly in the case of comedian Michael Richards, who sparked controversy when a video of him shouting racial epithets during a gig was posted on the internet.

Borat, played by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, had forced the US to see itself in a new light, according to Entertainment Weekly.

"He held up a mirror to America," Ms Majewski said.

Meryl Streep also came high in the list after what were described as two strong performances in two very different movies - the musical drama The Prairie Home Companion and the comedy The Devil Wears Prada.
